BEST USE

As a best practice, it is recommended to create construction punch lists throughout the duration of the project. This ensures that quality parameters are set up to document any remaining work that needs to be completed, or has not been completed correctly, within a timely manner.

These lists can then be utilized at key project milestones or as a project nears completion, whatever works best for your company's project management processes. Most companies choose to use punch lists as:

  • Quality assurance lists completed throughout the project
  • Final inspection lists completed at project closeout

We recommend using them as both. However, these lists should be limited to small or minor fixes. These fixes can include, but are not limited to:

  • Any interior or exterior issues
  • Incorrect installations
  • Mechanical issues
  • Any damage that occurred during the course of the project
  • Other unaddressed items outlined in the original contract

Keeping punch lists limited to small fixes ensures that the majority of large issues are addressed before a project's final inspection, generally through change orders, helping your projects stay on time and on budget.
