What is the difference between a Punch List and a Checklist?
A construction punch list is an organization tool used to compile & track a list of outstanding tasks that need to be completed before the completion of a construction job. Punch Lists are most commonly created near the end of the project as the construction team prepares to hand over the project to the client or owner. Often, Punch Lists are utilized during the close-out stage of construction for final walkthroughs and touch-ups. However, Punch Lists can also be used at key project milestones for regular inspections or quality assurance. More information on Punch Lists can be found in the article "What is a Construction Punch List?".
Checklists are reserved for general use, meaning they can be created for a list of tasks and sub-tasks at any time during the project—pre-construction, planning/design, sitework, etc.
Implementing a system of pre-defined Punch Lists and/or Checklists can help define and standardize common construction management processes.
Can I add sub-tasks to my Punch List?
Yes, you can add sub-tasks to a Punch List in ConstructionOnline! Sub-tasks are known as Item Issues in ConstructionOnline, while primary tasks are called Items. Each Item of a Punch List may contain an unlimited number of Item Issues—allowing you to break down a complex task into smaller, secondary tasks. Each Item Issue may contain its own description, responsible resource(s), priority, status, trade, due date, completion percentage, and relevant cost code.
Step-by-step instructions can be found in Add an Item Issue to a Punch List.
Can I sign a Punch List once it is completed?
Yes! Once a Punch List has been completed, you can sign the Punch List directly in ConstructionOnline with an electronic signature! If you prefer to sign a paper copy of a Punch List, you can also print out a version with blank signature lines.
How do I share a Punch List with my subcontractors?
To share an entire Punch List with a subcontractor via the Project Portal, you can add them as a Punch List Editor or Viewer to the Punch List. Punch List Viewers can view all the items in a Punch List, but cannot edit any items without being added as an Assigned Resource. Punch List Editors can view and edit every item on the Punch List, in addition to being able to edit the Punch List themselves.
If you only need to share specific Punch List Items with a subcontractor, you can add them as an Assigned Resource to each individual Item. When a subcontractor logs in to their Project Portal, they will only be able to view and edit the specific Punch List Item(s).
Please note that your company's global TeamLink permissions for Punch Lists must also be enabled for subcontractors to view and/or edit a Punch List in the Project Portal.
However, if a subcontractor does not have a ConstructionOnline account or would prefer a to view and/or print out a paper copy of a Punch List, you can also email them a copy of the Punch List.
Can I hide a Punch List from clients?
Yes! By default, all Punch Lists are hidden from clients (ClientLink Users) in the Project Portal—even if your company's global ClientLink permissions for Punch Lists have been enabled. Clients are only able to view entire Punch Lists if they have been added as a Punch List Editor or Viewer to the Punch List.
What is the difference between an Assigned Resource and a Related Resource?
Each Punch List Item in ConstructionOnline can be assigned an unlimited number of Related and/or Assigned Resources. Assigned Resources are able to view and edit a specific Punch List Item and its issues. Related Resources are only able view a specific Punch List Item and its issues.
If one of your users needs to be able to view and edit an entire Punch List, add them as a Punch List Editor to the Punch List instead of adding them as Assigned Resources to individual items. Punch List Editors can view and edit the entire Punch List.
Can we create Punch List templates?
No, you cannot create Punch List templates in ConstructionOnline. However, you can speed up the process of creating new Punch Lists by duplicating an existing Punch List and moving it to a new Project. Additionally, you can also build out a detailed Punch List structure in a Project Template to streamline future construction projects.
