What is a Company in ConstructionOnline?
In ConstructionOnline, a Company is an organizational record representing a business entity—a subcontractor firm, supplier, vendor, client organization, or any other company your business works with. While Contacts represent individual people, Companies represent the organizations those people belong to.
If you work regularly with businesses that have more than one point of contact—a project manager, an estimator, an owner—a Company record lets you group those Contacts under a single organizational entry. Rather than hunting across your Contacts List to remember who works where, you can open a Company record and immediately see every Contact associated with that organization, with the option to have one designated as the Primary Contact for quick reference.
Yes. Contacts can be linked to a Company record from within the Company's detail blade, either during Company creation or at any time afterward.
🗒️ Note: Adding a contact to a Company does not automatically update the "Company" field within that Contact's individual details. These fields are managed separately.
A Contact can be added to multiple Company records, but each Contact has a single "Company" field within their own Contact Details. If a person works across multiple organizations in your network, you may associate them with each relevant Company record while managing the primary Company designation within their Contact Details directly.
Not necessarily—it depends on how you work with them. Individual people who need access (to view project details, receive invitations and assignments, or log in) must always be created as Contacts. Company records are most useful when you work with organizations that have multiple points of contact, or when you need to store business-level information like trade category, licensing, or internal quality ratings.
For solo operators or one-person subs, a Contact record alone may be sufficient. For larger firms with multiple employees you interact with regularly, pairing a Company record with associated Contacts gives you a fuller, more organized picture.
Can I import Companies into ConstructionOnline?
Yes. Companies can be imported directly from an Excel file into your Company Directory. If your Company data isn't already in a spreadsheet, ConstructionOnline provides a downloadable Excel template to help you format everything correctly before importing.
What is the Primary Contact for a Company?
The Primary Contact is the designated point of contact for a Company record in ConstructionOnline—the individual your team should reach first for communication, approvals, or urgent matters related to that organization. When a Company has multiple associated Contacts, the Primary Contact designation makes it immediately clear who to go to without having to sort through the full list.
After you set the Primary Contact for a Company, a green "Primary Contact" badge appears on the designated Contact within the Company's "Contacts" tab, making them easy to identify at a glance.
What happens to Contacts when I delete their associated Company?
Deleting a Company does not delete the Contacts associated with it. Those Contacts will remain in your Contacts List exactly as they were—their individual records, details, and history are unaffected by the Company's removal. If you wish to delete a Contact's complete association with a Company, you will also need to adjust this in the "Company" field within their Contact Details as well.
