Creating OnCost™ Estimates

Add a Cost Code to an Estimate Category, Subcategory, or Item

Keep construction estimates organized by assigning Cost Codes to individual Estimate Categories, Subcategories, and Items

BACKGROUND

As the leading construction management software platform, ConstructionOnline™ provides construction pros with a number of ways to organize construction data across all aspects of construction project management. With ConstructionOnline's Cost Code System, construction companies can build customized Cost Code Lists to categorize construction costs into specific divisions—boosting visibility for division costs and simplifying project data across all features in ConstructionOnline. Using ConstructionOnline's powerful construction cost estimating solution, OnCost™ Estimating, ConstructionOnline Company Users can also assign Cost Codes to individual Estimate Categories, Subcategories, and Items. 

PREREQUISITES

  • To add Cost Codes to an Estimate, a Cost Code List must be already assigned to the Project
    • Only Company Admin Users or the Project Creator can add a Cost Code List to a Project.
  • The Cost Code column of your Estimate must be visible to add Cost Codes to an Estimate. 
    • The Cost Code column is included by default in the Advanced Estimate, Job Costing, and Invoicing estimate column views. More instructions for displaying hidden Estimating columns can be found in Show/Hide Estimate Columns

STEPS TO ADD A COST CODE TO AN ESTIMATE CATEGORY, SUBCATEGORY, OR ITEM

  1. Navigate to the desired Project via the Left Sidebar.
  2. Select the Financials tab to automatically open the Estimating category.
  3. Navigate to the Estimate Sheet with the specific Estimate Category, Subcategory, or Item.
  4. Locate the Cost Code column, then click inside the corresponding cell. 
  5. Begin entering the desired Cost Code. As you start typing, a dropdown menu with all corresponding Cost Codes will appear.  
    1. As a reminder, Cost Codes cannot be added to an Estimate if a Cost Code List has not been added to the Project. To add a Cost Code List within the Estimate, click the text "Assign here". 
      1. Only Company Admin Users or the Project Creator can add a Cost Code List within the Estimate.

  6. Select the desired Cost Code from the dropdown menu to automatically save the Cost Code to the Estimate Category, Subcategory, or Item.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Only one Cost Code can be assigned per Estimate Category, Subcategory, or Item. 
  • To make the entire Cost Code List appear in the dropdown menu, enter a single space in the Cost Code text box. 
  • Cost Codes will not send over when an Estimate is sent from ConstructionOnline to QuickBooks Online or QuickBooks Desktop. 
  • Permissions: Company Users must have Estimating permissions set as "Can Create, Edit, & Delete" to add Cost Codes to an Estimate.
    • Company Users with Estimating permissions set to "Can View" can view Cost Codes in Estimates they have access to, but cannot add Cost Codes to an Estimate.
  • Cost Codes cannot be added to entries on the Selections, Company Overhead and Margin, or Takeoffs sheets of an Estimate. 
  • Mobile App: Adding Cost Codes to Estimates is exclusively available via browser access to ConstructionOnline. Estimates are presented in View-Only Mode on the ConstructionOnline Mobile App.
